Fun at the Farm

We had a great day today at the farm! Although it was a little chilly, the kids had a great time riding the wagon, learning about how pumpkins grow and exploring life on the farm. Here's a few photos from the trip:

A BIG THANK YOU and MERCI goes out to all the parent volunteers who joined us and helped make this day great. We couldn't have done it without you :)

Next Thursday

On Thursday October 31st, our class will be celebrating the end of our Fall unit with a simple party. Those students who celebrate Halloween may wear their costume to school. Students who do not celebrate this tradition may dress up, borrow something from our house centre or come to school in their usual attire. Please do not allow your child to bring toy weapons, anything denoting violence or items that could frighten other students.

What will we do?
-  Sing Halloween songs
- Show off our costumes in a costume parade
- Play games
- Have some treats

If you would like your child to bring in a treat for the class please ensure they are nut free and there is enough for everyone to share (we have 20 students).

Please let me know if you have any questions and/or concerns.

We're all looking forward to a great day together! Thanks again to all the parents who volunteered to join us but like I said, we can only take three (Jamila Redhead, Jovie Curameng and Irene Kuo) There will be other opportunities for you to volunteer throughout the year so not to worry!

A La Ferme!

I hope everyone had a lovely, restful extra long weekend and enjoyed their Thanksgiving with friends and family! And for those of you who celebrate Eid, Eid Mubarak! Hopefully you enojoyed your holiday with loved ones :)

With our trip to Whittamore's fast approaching, the children are getting more and more excited about it and interested in learning about life on the farm. (On a side note- don't forget, we're going on Thursday October 24th rain or shine! Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately, comes with a lunch and brings a bag to carry home their pumpkin! If your child is not coming, please note there is no busing that day and all kindergarten classes will be attending the trip so there will be no classes for your child.) This week, we've been talking about animals that live on the farm and how pumpkins grow. In the math centre, we've been learning how to add numbers to five (ex: 1+4=5, 2+3=5 etc). It has been a short but busy and productive week!
Here is some of the vocabulary we've been working on:

La ferme                              The farm

La grange                             The barn

La graine                              Seed
La plante                             A plant

La fleur                                 Flower
Cueillir                                 To pick
La tarte à citrouille          Pumpkin pie

To help the students learn some of the animals names, we've been singing Le Vieux Macdonald (Old Macdonald had a Farm):

Le vieux Macdonald à une ferme

Le vieux Macdonald à une ferme
I, A, I, A O
Et dans sa ferme il à un cochon
I, A, I, A, O
Avec un oink oink ici, et un oink oink là-bas
Oink oink ici et un oink oink partout
Le vieux Macdonald à une ferme
I, A, I, A,O
(Change bolded animal and sound for any desired animal)

Here are some of the centres we've been hard at work at:

All Set For The Farm

Thank you thank you to everyone for getting the permission forms for our trip to the farm in on time! And also thank you very much to all the parents who volunteered! Unfortunately, we can only take three of you but there will definitely be other opportunities for you to help out throughout the year so not to worry! I chose the volunteers on a first come first served basis, so if you are one of them, there is a note in your child's bag today letting you know that. I look forward to seeing you on Oct 24th! And please don't hesitate to contact me should you have any questions and/or concerns.
For those of you who said your child will be unable to attend the trip- please note there will be no regular class or busing that day so please make different arrangements. If this is an issue, please contact me and we will figure out how to deal with the situation.
And for all our students who are bused to and from school everyday, don't forget! THERE WILL BE NO RETURN BUSING on the day of our trip so please make other arrangements.
Thanks again! We're all looking forward to a great day of fun on the farm!

My Body and Colours

This was an exciting week in Room 109! We've been smiling pretty (for picture day on Tuesday) learning lots and working hard. We're still having some trouble following instructions, listening during teaching time and walking quietly in the hallways, but I think with a bit more practice, we'll have these rules and routines down in no time.
This week we've been doing some work on patterning. The children were asked to identify and extend patterns with different blocks and then create their own. They did a great job!
We've also started to learn different colours and the parts of our body. Here is some vocab for you to work with/test your child on:

Les couleurs                       Colours
Rouge                                   Red
Jaune                                    Yellow
Bleu                                       Blue
Vert                                       Green
Orange                                 Orange
Violet                                   Purple
Rose                                      Pink
Brun                                      Brown
Noir                                       Black
Blanc                                     White

Le corps                               The body
La tête                                  Head
Les yeux                              Eyes
Les oreilles                         Ears
La bouche                           Mouth
Le nez                                   Nose
La main                                Hand
Le pied                                 Foot
Les cheveux                       Hair
Les dents                            Teeth
Le dos                                   Back
Des cils                                 Eyebrows
Les orteils                           Toes
Les doigts                            Fingers
Le bras                                  Arm
La jambe                             Leg
Le genou                             Knee
Le coude                             Elbow
Les cheveux                      Hair
L'estomac                          Stomach

To help us in learning these words, here are a few new songs we learned this week:

Quand je dis jaune, tope-là tu me donnes

Au pays des couleurs on y danse, on y danse
Au pays des couleurs on y danse tous ensemble

Boogie Woogie (Hokey Pokey)

Je mets mon corps en avant
Je mets mon corps en arrière
Je mets mon corps en avant
Et je fais de petits ronds
Je danse le boogie woogie
Et je tourne en rond
Et je fais un grand saut !
(Change bolded word to another body part : la tete, le nez, le genou etc.)

Library Bags

Today was library day! A few students didn't bring back their books so they were unable to sign out a new one. Along with their library books today, I've included a little booklet called "Je suis une fille et j'ai..." it talks about all of our different body parts and it is a book the children have been listening to in the listening centre all week long. It is for them to keep. Ask them to read it to you and see if they know what all the different body parts are.
Every 2-3 weeks or so (depending on how fast we go), they will receive a new book like this one that goes along with the themes we've been working on. Encourage them to read them, colour them and enjoy them!
