Petit, Moyen, et Grand!

To all those who celebrate Lunar New Year- Kung Hei Fat Choy!
This week, in addition to continuing our discussion of winter, we started to talk about size and measuring objects, who things roll, how to count to 90, and how to clean up after ourselves .
We learned some new words:
Petit         Small
Moyen     Medium
Grand      Big
We learned a new song:
Atchoum !
Atchoum !
Le soleil s'est caché
Atchoum !
L'hiver est arrivé
Atchoum !
Le ciel s'est enrhumé
Atchoum !
Il a éternué
AAAAAAAtchoum !
Des milliers de flocons
sur les toits des maisons…

 Find it here: Atchoum!

And we learned about a new celebration for many of our friends: La nouvelle année chinoise- Chinese New Year!

Here's a look at some of the fun we've had this week:

Valentine's Day is just around the corner! As such, we will be talking about being kind and caring and what that looks like- both in our classroom and at home. Please encourage your child to reflect and act on this!
Also, we will be making 'mailboxes' to collect Valentine cards and having a time of sharing on Friday the 14th of February. If you would like your child to give out cards to his or her classmates, here is a list of names from our class:

100 Days!

We're getting close! Monday February 10th marks the 100th Day of School for the 2013/2014 school year. The children have been working so hard and wonderfully, that we thought it important to have a little celebration of learning and fun- experiencing 100 through many different activities.
We've been practising counting to 100 a lot in preparation! To help us see 100 in different ways, I would like to ask that each student bring in a collection of 100 things. Some ideas are :
- tooth picks
- rice
- popcorn kernels
- buttons
- paper clips
- stickers
- macaroni
- beans
Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions/concerns :)

Numbers and Letters

This week in Room 109, we have been finishing up our discussion with movement and location. The students are really starting to grasp the new vocabulary and try to use it with prompts! It's been great to see and lots of fun!
As we get closer to the 100th Day of School, we've been working hard to learn our numbers. Some students are still struggling with this a bit, but we're working together and practising lots! We have also been working on recognizing all of the letters of the alphabet (upper case and lower case) and what sounds they make. The children are showing improvement!
Here are some pictures of the fun we've been having while learning this week:

L'hiver!

This week we have continued to discuss location, movement and directions in the classroom. By now, most of the children are getting the vocabulary and correctly describing where things are in our room. Test them at home to keep them on their toes :) To help in this endeavor, we've been learning a song:
Sur, Sous, Dans… (tune : London Bridge)
Sur, sous, dans, devant, derrière,
Devant, derrière, devant, derrière.
Sur, sous, dans, devant, derrière,
À côté de.
We've also been talking more about winter and different things we like to do when it's cold and snowy. Snowmen was a biggy! So, we've started to learn and song (Un bonhomme) and a poem (Roule, roule, roule!) to learn about how we make them!:
Un bonhomme (tune : Frère Jacques)
Fais un bonhomme
Fais un bonhomme
Grand et gros
Grand et gros
Le soleil brille
Le soleil brille
 Et il fond
Et il fond
Roule, roule, roule
Roule, roule, roule.
Je fais une petite boule de neige.
Roule, roule, roule.
Je fais une moyenne boule de neige.
Roule, roule, roule.
Je fais une grande boule de neige.
Je fais les yeux, le nez, la bouche
Et je mets un chapeau.
Qu’est-ce que c’est ?
C’est un bonhomme de neige !
Unfortunately, we haven't been going outside as much as I would like. We have been having quite a few listening issues in the classroom since the break and have had quite a few talks about how we behave in school. Please try to remind your children that listening and following routines is important for success and to enjoy themselves! :)
Despite some of the bad behaviour, we've had a fun week building houses, making snowflakes and experimenting with ramps and rolling:

Happy New Year!

Welcome back and Happy New Year to everyone! I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful and restful two weeks and survived all of the crazy weather!
This week we've been having fun coming back to the class, talking about our breaks, discussing the weather and learning how to explain locations.
Some of the vocabulary that we've been working on is:
on                                 sur
under                            sous
in                                 dans
in front                         devant
behind                         derrière

winter                          l'hiver
cold                             froid
snow                           la neige
I don't like that!           Je n'aime pas ça!
Happy New Year!      Bonnne nouvelle année!
2014                           Deux mille quatorze

I still haven't gotten any volunteers to make some playdough... if anyone is willing it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
