Les dinosaures et la nourriture

It has been a very full few weeks in Room 109! The children have been busy and working hard!
Some of the things we've been discussing include dinosaurs, healthy vs unhealthy food, and the different sounds that letters make!

After finding a few dinosaur books in our class library, I noticed how many students in our class love learning about them! So, we decided to make a graph about which type of dinosaur we like the best and everyone drew a picture of their favourite one.

We've also been very excited about Spring! With Spring comes lots of new things and growth everywhere. As such, we did a little experiment to see what happens when we plant seeds. We put some water, a paper towel, and some bean seeds in a bowl and covered it with plastic wrap. After a few days, the seeds grew bigger, and after a few more they started expanding into something new. Now, we're seeing roots grow and beans begin to form! The kids are so excited to see the change that occurs everyday. We also talked about what seeds need to grow: they need to be in dirt, they need sunshine and water, and they need space. After we give them these, they grow into different plants and the life cycle of the seed begins again. All of the children love to tell you what they learned so if you get a chance, ask your child about it.

As well, the students have been interested in what everyone has for snack each day, so I thought it would be a good opportunity for us to talk about healthy food- why we eat it, why it's good for us, and why we try to avoid unhealthy food. It's very encouraging to see the support from most of you in this endeavour as I look at the wonderful healthy snacks you pack each day. Thank you and keep up  the good work!

Another exciting thing to see in our classroom is the students recognizing letter sounds and now groups of letters sounds! This week we talked about 'oi' which makes the sound 'wuh' in French. The students were able to identify lots of different words that have this sound in them. They're on their way to becoming good spellers!

Finally, over the past couple of weeks, we've been starting to talk about addition. Right now, we're working on simple numbers that equal up to 10. Lots of the children are really getting it but a few are still struggling. If you can, give your child a little quiz adding numbers that they would be able to count with their fingers to help them practice at home. :)

And a small reminder: As the weather gets warmer, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for outdoor play- we love to take advantage of the beautiful sun and fresh air! :)
